Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo National Park is Uganda's smallest savannah national park and one of the country's most accessible wildlife destinations. Located between Kampala and southwestern Uganda, the park covers approximately 370 square kilometers and is characterized by rolling hills, open grasslands, acacia woodlands, wetlands, and five lakes that form part of the greater Lake Mburo ecosystem.

The park is renowned for its rich biodiversity, hosting zebras, impalas, elands, buffaloes, warthogs, topis, waterbucks, hippos, crocodiles, and more than 350 bird species. Unlike many other national parks in Uganda, Lake Mburo offers unique opportunities for walking safaris and horseback safaris, allowing visitors to experience wildlife from a different perspective.

Its convenient location makes it a popular stopover for travelers heading to or returning from gorilla trekking adventures in southwestern Uganda.

When is the best time to go?

Lake Mburo National Park can be visited throughout the year, but the dry seasons offer the best wildlife viewing opportunities.

June to September

This is the peak dry season when animals gather around water sources, making wildlife easier to spot. Roads and trails are generally in excellent condition.

December to February

Another favorable dry period with warm weather and excellent conditions for game viewing and outdoor activities.

March to May & October to November

These months experience more rainfall, resulting in lush landscapes and excellent birdwatching opportunities. Wildlife remains visible, though some tracks may become muddy.

How to get there

By Road

Lake Mburo National Park is located approximately 240 kilometers from Kampala, a journey of about 3.5 to 4 hours via the Kampala–Masaka–Mbarara highway. The park’s main entrance is easily accessible, making it one of the closest national parks to Uganda’s capital.

By Air

Visitors can take scheduled or charter flights from Kajjansi Airfield or Entebbe International Airport to the nearby airstrips serving the park, significantly reducing travel time.
