Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife destinations and a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in southwestern Uganda. Covering approximately 331 square kilometers of ancient rainforest, Bwindi is renowned for hosting nearly half of the world's remaining mountain gorilla population.

The park is characterized by dense tropical rainforest, mist-covered hills, deep valleys, and exceptional biodiversity. Besides mountain gorillas, Bwindi is home to over 120 mammal species, 350 bird species, 220 butterfly species, and numerous reptiles and amphibians. Its rich ecosystems make it a premier destination for gorilla trekking, birdwatching, nature walks, and cultural encounters with the indigenous Batwa community.

Bwindi is divided into four gorilla trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo, each offering unique trekking experiences and access to habituated gorilla families.

When is the best time to go?

Bwindi Impenetrable national Park can be visited throughout the year, but the dry seasons offer the best trekking conditions.

Dry Season (Best Time)

June to September and December to February

  • Easier hiking trails with less mud.
  • Better conditions for gorilla trekking and forest walks.
  • More comfortable wildlife viewing and photography.
  • Peak tourist season, so permits should be booked well in advance.

Wet Season

March to May and October to November

  • Lush green scenery and beautiful forest landscapes.
  • Fewer visitors and more accommodation availability.
  • Excellent birdwatching opportunities, especially for migratory species.
  • Trails can be slippery and challenging due to rainfall.

For the best overall experience, most travelers prefer visiting during the dry months, particularly from June to September.
