Murchison Falls National Park
OVERVIEW | WHEN TO VISIT |HOW TO GET THERE
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda's smallest national park, covering approximately 33.7 square kilometers in the southwestern corner of the country. Located within the spectacular Virunga Mountain range, the park shares borders with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is renowned for its population of endangered mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, and three majestic volcanic mountains: Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Sabyinyo.
Often described as the place "where gold meets silver," Mgahinga Gorilla National Park offers visitors a unique opportunity to encounter both mountain gorillas and golden monkeys in their natural habitat while enjoying breathtaking volcanic scenery, bamboo forests, and montane woodlands. The park forms part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area, one of Africa's most important biodiversity hotspots.
Murchison Falls National Park can be visited year-round, but the dry seasons offer the best wildlife viewing opportunities.
June to September: Peak safari season with excellent game viewing and easier access to wildlife tracks.
December to February: Another ideal period with warm temperatures and minimal rainfall.
March to May & October to November: Green seasons with fewer visitors, lush scenery, excellent birdwatching, and discounted safari rates.
The park is approximately 305 kilometers from Kampala, taking about 5 to 6 hours by road. Visitors can access the park through several gates, including Kichumbanyobo Gate, Tangi Gate, and Mubako Gate.
Scheduled and charter flights operate from Kajjansi Airfield and Entebbe International Airport to airstrips within the park, including Pakuba, Chobe, and Bugungu Airstrips.
