Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda's smallest national park, covering approximately 33.7 square kilometers in the southwestern corner of the country. Located within the spectacular Virunga Mountain range, the park shares borders with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is renowned for its population of endangered mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, and three majestic volcanic mountains: Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Sabyinyo.

Often described as the place "where gold meets silver," Mgahinga Gorilla National Park offers visitors a unique opportunity to encounter both mountain gorillas and golden monkeys in their natural habitat while enjoying breathtaking volcanic scenery, bamboo forests, and montane woodlands. The park forms part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area, one of Africa's most important biodiversity hotspots.

When is the best time to go?

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park can be visited throughout the year, but the dry seasons offer the best trekking conditions:

  • June to September – The peak dry season with easier hiking trails and excellent wildlife viewing opportunities.
  • December to February – Another favorable dry season with clear skies and comfortable trekking conditions.
  • March to May – Rainy season with lush vegetation and fewer visitors.
  • October to November – Short rains, offering greener landscapes and a quieter safari experience.

For gorilla trekking, the dry seasons are generally preferred due to reduced trail slipperiness and improved hiking conditions.

How to get there

By Road

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is approximately 510 kilometers from Kampala, a journey of about 8–10 hours by road. The most common route passes through Kabale and Kisoro before reaching the park headquarters at Ntebeko.

By Air

Visitors can take a scheduled domestic flight from Entebbe International Airport to Kisoro Airstrip and then transfer by road to the park, which takes about 30 minutes.
