Queen Elizabeth National Park is Uganda's most popular savannah wildlife destination and one of the most biodiverse protected areas in Africa. Located in western Uganda between Lake George and Lake Edward, the park covers approximately 1,978 square kilometers and is home to an incredible variety of wildlife, landscapes, and bird species.

The park boasts over 95 mammal species and more than 600 bird species, making it a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts, birdwatchers, photographers, and nature lovers. Its diverse habitats include open savannah grasslands, wetlands, crater lakes, tropical forests, and the famous Kazinga Channel, which supports one of Africa's highest concentrations of hippos.

Visitors can encounter elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards, Uganda kobs, warthogs, hyenas, crocodiles, and numerous primates. The Ishasha Sector is particularly famous for its unique tree-climbing lions, a rare phenomenon found in only a few places worldwide.

When is the best time to go?

Queen Elizabeth National Park is open throughout the year, but the best time to visit depends on your interests.

Dry Season (June to September & December to February)

  • Best for game viewing.
  • Wildlife gathers around water sources, making animals easier to spot.
  • Roads and tracks are more accessible.
  • Ideal for photography and safari drives.

Wet Season (March to May & October to November)

  • Landscapes become lush and green.
  • Excellent birdwatching opportunities, especially for migratory birds.
  • Fewer tourists and lower accommodation rates.
  • Good for scenic photography.

For the best overall wildlife experience, the dry months of June to September and December to February are highly recommended.

How to get there

By Road

The park is approximately 400 kilometers from Kampala and can be reached in about 6–7 hours by road.

Popular routes include:

  • Kampala – Mbarara – Bushenyi – Queen Elizabeth National Park
  • Kampala – Fort Portal – Queen Elizabeth National Park

By Air

Scheduled and charter flights operate from Entebbe International Airport to nearby airstrips including:

  • Mweya Airstrip
  • Kasese Airstrip
  • Ishasha Airstrip

Flights significantly reduce travel time and offer spectacular aerial views of Uganda’s landscapes.
