Kibale Forest National Park
OVERVIEW | WHEN TO VISIT |HOW TO GET THERE
Located in western Uganda near Fort Portal, Kibale National Park is renowned as the "Primate Capital of the World." Covering approximately 766 square kilometers of tropical rainforest, the park is home to over 1,500 chimpanzees and 13 species of primates, making it one of the best destinations in Africa for chimpanzee trekking.
Visitors can also enjoy bird watching, nature walks, nocturnal forest walks, chimpanzee habituation experiences, and cultural encounters around the park. The forest hosts over 325 bird species and a variety of wildlife including forest elephants, buffaloes, bushbucks, and numerous monkey species.
Kibale National Park can be visited throughout the year, but the dry seasons offer the best conditions for chimpanzee trekking and forest walks.
June to September – Peak season with drier trails and excellent wildlife viewing.
December to February – Another dry period with favorable trekking conditions and fewer crowds.
March to May
October to November
During these months, the forest is lush and ideal for birdwatching, especially when migratory birds are present. However, trails can become muddy and slippery, making trekking more challenging.
Kibale National Park is approximately 320–330 km from Kampala, a journey that takes about 5 to 6 hours via the Kampala–Mubende–Fort Portal highway. The road is fully tarmacked for most of the journey and offers scenic views of Uganda’s countryside. From Fort Portal, the park is about one hour away.
Travelers can take scheduled or chartered domestic flights from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield to nearby airstrips such as Fort Portal, Kasese, or Ndali. From the airstrip, a short road transfer takes visitors to the park.
