Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
OVERVIEW | WHEN TO VISIT |HOW TO GET THERE
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife destinations and a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in southwestern Uganda. Covering approximately 331 square kilometers of ancient rainforest, Bwindi is renowned for hosting nearly half of the world's remaining mountain gorilla population.
The park is characterized by dense tropical rainforest, mist-covered hills, deep valleys, and exceptional biodiversity. Besides mountain gorillas, Bwindi is home to over 120 mammal species, 350 bird species, 220 butterfly species, and numerous reptiles and amphibians. Its rich ecosystems make it a premier destination for gorilla trekking, birdwatching, nature walks, and cultural encounters with the indigenous Batwa community.
Bwindi is divided into four gorilla trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo, each offering unique trekking experiences and access to habituated gorilla families.
Bwindi Impenetrable national Park can be visited throughout the year, but the dry seasons offer the best trekking conditions.
For the best overall experience, most travelers prefer visiting during the dry months, particularly from June to September.
Bwindi is approximately 8–10 hours’ drive from Kampala or Entebbe, depending on the sector being visited.
Road transfers offer opportunities to enjoy Uganda’s countryside, scenic hills, and local communities along the way.
Domestic scheduled and charter flights operate from Entebbe International Airport to nearby airstrips including:
The flight takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours, followed by a road transfer to the lodge or trekking sector.
