Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park lies within the Virunga Volcanoes and is Uganda's smallest national park. Although it has one habituated gorilla family for trekking, the park offers a quieter experience with fewer visitors.

In addition to gorilla trekking, visitors can enjoy golden monkey tracking, volcano climbing, birdwatching, and cultural experiences with the indigenous Batwa community.

Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

Rwanda offers one of Africa's most accessible gorilla trekking experiences. Trekking takes place in Volcanoes National Park, located just a two to three-hour drive from Kigali International Airport.

The park forms part of the magnificent Virunga Mountain Range and protects several habituated gorilla families living among bamboo forests and volcanic slopes.

Many travelers choose Rwanda because they can arrive in Kigali and begin trekking the following morning without requiring long road transfers.

What Happens During Gorilla Trekking?

Your day begins early with registration and a briefing at the park headquarters. Park officials explain trekking rules, safety guidelines, and assign visitors to specific gorilla families based on fitness levels and group size.

Each trekking group consists of a maximum of eight visitors accompanied by experienced ranger guides and trackers.

After entering the forest, trackers locate the gorilla family by following fresh signs such as footprints, broken vegetation, nests, and vocalizations. Trekking time varies considerably depending on the gorillas' location and may take anywhere from one to six hours.

Once the gorillas are located, visitors spend exactly one hour observing them from a safe distance. During this magical hour, you can quietly watch their daily activities while taking photographs without flash.

After the visit, you return to the park headquarters where successful trekkers receive a Gorilla Trekking Certificate.
